Course Content:

This course will provide an overview of social housing enabling those who attend to familiarise themselves with the key purpose of social housing and its typical operations. We will look at the history of housing, current practices, and how it differs from other sectors. We will consider the main tenancy types provided by social housing providers and how this compares to the wider market. We will consider the importance of customer service and tenancy engagement and how these fit in with the Regulator of Social Housing standards. We will also explore some of the challenges faced by the sector and how these can be overcome.

Learning Outcomes:

Understand the purpose and functions of social housing today – how does it compare to other tenure types

  •  Learn the history of how and why we have social housing and how this has changed and developed over time

  •  Provide an overview of the funding of social housing

  •  Consider the rights and responsibility of both tenants and landlords in the sector

  •  Consider the relationships with internal and external partners that social housing organisation need to thrive

  •  Consider common housing management functions such as asset management and tenancy sustainment

  •  Common occupancy agreements – including secure, assured, assured shorthold tenancies

  •  Tenants’ statutory and common law rights, including rights to assign, exchange and succeed to a tenancy

  •  The importance of customer satisfaction, tenancy engagement and how this fits in with the Regulator of Social Housing requirements
